The Tanzanian school system consists of seven years of elementary school (Standard 1-7) starting at the age of 7, followed by four years of secondary school (O-Level, Form 1-4), two years of “Advanced Level” (A-Level, Form 5-6), followed by university (usually a 3-year program for a bachelor’s degree). In addition, two pre-school years are offered at the age of 5-6, but attendance is not compulsory.
\nIn Standard IV, VII, Form IV and Form VI, nationwide examinations are taken, which must be passed in order to be promoted. In 2011, 57% of primary school pupils were transferred to secondary schools, in 2012 it was only a surprising 30%. Further information<\/a>
\nThose pupils who were not promoted to A-level are allowed to take the exam again the following year. However, many find it difficult to improve their results as they no longer take part in school life and therefore cannot take courses again. A few students can take advantage of the second chance by preparing for the exam at private schools. Pupils who have not made the leap to secondary school but have achieved a sufficient result can apply to train as primary school teachers or start various vocational training courses.
