Fritz Mehlich is not only a retired teacher and Tanzania lover, but also the sponsor of little Rose in the Schulbank scholarship program. Fritz is familiar with the educational problems in Tanzania and spent a long time thinking about how he could use his experience to support schoolchildren in their schools alongside his sponsorship of Rose. Noch vor 12 Monaten haben wir an dieser Stelle Paten für unsere neuen Schüler an der St. Dominik Savio Secondary School in Tosamaganga gesucht. Mittlerweile sind unsere Schützlinge bereits in ihrem zweiten Schuljahr und vier von ihnen werden von einem deutschen Paten unterstützt. Ganz anders als in den Grundschulen, ist hier mittlerweile eine lockere Kommunikation mit den Schülern möglich. Zusehens verfliegt ihre Unsicherheit, es wird zusammen gelacht und über Zukunftspläne gesprochen. Hier entsteht etwas. Wir freuen uns schon auf das nächste Treffen J

At home with Anamaria

Hausbesuche gehören für Destory, unserem Program Manager in Iringa, zur täglichen Arbeit. Für uns sind Sie immer wieder eine große Herausforderung. Meint man, in einem Termin wieder ein Bisschen über die Familienkultur in Tansania gelernt zu haben, so ist man bereits nach dem nächsten Termin wieder völlig desillusioniert und erkennt, wie lange es dauert, Kultur und Traditionen der Menschen hier zu begreifen.
Und trotzdem, der Kontakt mit den Familien und ihrer herzlichen Willkommenskultur ist immer wieder ein besonderes Erlebnis, das uns motiviert.
Anamaria zum Beispiel, das Patenkind von Monika, hatte im letzten Jahr ihre Grundschulzeit mit einem A, also einer exzellenten Note abgeschlossen. Grund genug, um auch ihren Eltern zu gratulieren und zu sehen, wie es Anamaria auf der neuen weiterführenden Privatschule gefällt. Sowohl Anamaria, wie auch ihre Eltern waren sehr zufrieden, sich für die Spring Value Secondary School entschieden zu haben und strahlten vor Freude. Auch, wenn die Selbstbeteiligung der Eltern anfänglich nur schwer zu organisieren war. Nicht nur zuhause, sondern auch in ihrer Schule konnten wir Anamaria besuchen und freuen uns, wie schnell sie sich integriert hat, auf die Menschen zugeht, lacht, und wissbegierig alles Neue aufsaugt. Viel Erfolg Anamaria, Du schaffst das!

 

Meshack, a visit for you!

Als wir im Herbst erfuhren, dass sich Silvia und Peter Kleinschnieder auf den Weg machen würden, um ihren Schützling Meshack in Tansania zu besuchen und um sich selbst ein Bild von Schulbank in Iringa zu machen, waren wir begeistert. Genauso stellen wir uns Transparenz vor. Schreiben kann man viel, aber ein direktes und positives Feedback von Paten zu bekommen, ist mehr als hilfreich.
Im Dezember ging es dann für die Kleinschnieders endlich los. Ein kleines Abenteuer und doch wohl kalkuliert. Zusammen mit Destory Wilson, unserem Program Manager in Iringa, war Schulbank bereits im Vorfeld behilflich, Flüge, Unterkünfte und Safaris zu buchen und natürlich das Treffen mit Meshack an der Star International Primary School zu organisieren.
Ich konnte mein Patenkind kennnenlernen und wir bekamen einen kleinen Einblick in den Schulbertrieb, berichtet Silvia Kleinschnieder nach ihrer Reise. Es ist bemerkenswert, mit wie viel Freude die Kinder am Unterricht teilnehmen- trotz der Armut sind sie so fröhlich – sie singen, tanzen und toben in den Pausen auf dem schuleigenen Spielplatz. Das übertraf unsere Erwartungen. Man merkt, wie viel Herzblut Schulbank in dieses Projekt steckt. Es war immer weit weg- und plötzlich so nah – einfach unvergessliche Eindrücke. Hier kommt wirklich jede Spende an. Tolle Arbeit die Schulbank hier leistet! Ein besonderer Dank auch an Destory, der uns vor Ort betreut hat und in der kurzen Zeit ein guter Freund geworden ist.

Last check: German Red Cross in Iringa at school desk

Thumbs up for the voluntary service at Schulbank in Tanzania. On their tour of Africa, the Red Cross Youth also stopped by Schulbank in Iringa on February 2 to get an idea of our work on the ground. “High praise for so much commitment,” says Carolin Schulz, coordinator of the Red Cross Youth Volunteer Service.

After a lengthy planning phase, we can now announce that Schulbank has already set up its first volunteer position for next year in Iringa, Tanzania. Sending volunteers to a foreign country is a big task and requires a lot of experience. Despite being a small and young organization, we are able to offer a volunteer service in Tanzania from autumn 2016 thanks to our cooperation partner, the Red Cross Youth, and weltwärts, the funding programme of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The German Red Cross is Germany’s largest provider of voluntary services and has been sending volunteers to Tanzania for several years. “We have come to know the Schulbank team as very professional and are convinced by their scholarship concept,” says Carolin Schulz, coordinator of the Youth Red Cross volunteer service.

Visit to Africa at Baumberg elementary school

It was back to the school desk from October 21 to 23, 2015 for Destory Wilson, the head of Schulbank in Tanzania. This was in response to a warm invitation from class 2a of the Baumberg elementary school in Havixbeck. Over the course of three project days, the pupils and their African guest developed a picture of Tanzanian family life, urban and rural life, school life and much more.
The pupils were not the only ones impressed by the stories, far removed from the reality of their lives. Destory Wilson was also impressed by the inquisitiveness of his audience, the way the lessons were conducted and, of course, the modern facilities at Baumberg Primary School. Impressions that will stay with everyone for a long time to come.
We would like to thank the class teacher Ms. Temme for the great preparation of the lesson and hope to be able to initiate and continue the exchange between German and African children.

First donor and patent meeting in Havixbeck

After the first school bench meeting took place in Tanzania in January, it was time to introduce ourselves in person in Germany. And the occasion could not have been better: Destory Wilson, our head of the scholarship program in Tanzania, was visiting Germany for two weeks. Incidentally, it was his first trip outside Tanzania.
Around 30 donors and sponsors accepted our invitation to an initial meeting and interesting exchange in Havixbeck. In an impressive speech, Destory Wilson made it clear how differentiated the support of the education fund is and how grateful both parents and pupils are.
In his presentation on the further development of Schulbank, Alexander Kösters, member of the Management Board, explained that Schulbank will continue to grow through its scholarship awards in the future, but will do so with caution. Financial stability and quality support for scholarship holders would take precedence over rapid growth and expansion.

School desk goes mobile: donations for vehicle in Tanzania.

20151101083234As the number of partner schools increases, so do the distances we have to travel to support schools and pupils. In view of this and the safety aspects that we have to consider as the person responsible for our future volunteers, we have decided to purchase a robust 9-seater (18 in Tanzania).
The purchase and ancillary costs of the vehicle are covered by private donations from the association members.

Diese fünf Stipendiaten von Schulbank gehören dem ersten Jahrgang der neuen weiterführenden Schule St. Dominic Savio Secondary School an. Alle zeichnen sich durch einen guten bis sehr guten Abschluss an ihrer Grundschule aus. Seit Februar 2015 lernen und leben sie an der St. Dominic Savio Secondary School, die in einen katholisches Klosterkomplex in Tosamaganga in der Nähe von Iringa integriert ist. Read more
