Visit to Africa at Baumberg elementary school

It was back to the school desk from October 21 to 23, 2015 for Destory Wilson, the head of Schulbank in Tanzania. This was in response to a warm invitation from class 2a of the Baumberg elementary school in Havixbeck. Over the course of three project days, the pupils and their African guest developed a picture of Tanzanian family life, urban and rural life, school life and much more.
The pupils were not the only ones impressed by the stories, far removed from the reality of their lives. Destory Wilson was also impressed by the inquisitiveness of his audience, the way the lessons were conducted and, of course, the modern facilities at Baumberg Primary School. Impressions that will stay with everyone for a long time to come.
We would like to thank the class teacher Ms. Temme for the great preparation of the lesson and hope to be able to initiate and continue the exchange between German and African children.

Alle zeichnen sich durch einen guten bis sehr guten Abschluss an ihrer Grundschule aus. School desk in the Podio sponsorship program

Organizations like Schulbank always have two problems when it comes to IT:
The requirements for the systems are often more complex than one might imagine. At Schulbank, for example, applicants, scholarship holders, schools and universities, godparents and sponsors have to be linked together in processes. Financial transactions have to be managed, results documented and communication archived. And all this across national borders, with poor internet connections and the most basic equipment.
At the same time, these solutions must cost little or nothing. Especially if the organizations’ ancillary costs are not borne by the donors, such as Schulbank. Software, as briefly outlined above, are complex cloud applications that are used in large companies and cost several thousand euros. One of these software providers is Podio.
Podio has something over almost all other providers: an exceptional understanding of socially committed organizations and a sponsorship program through which Podio makes its software available free of charge after reviewing an application. Our application was approved last week. Thank you Podio.

First cooperation with state elementary school

Und es geht doch: Qualifizierte Bildung kann auch an staatlichen Schulen in Tansania stattfinden. Schulbank e.V. geht eine Kooperation mit der staatlichen Primary School Ukombozi in Iringa ein. Ukombozi schnitt im offiziellen Schul-Ranking 2014 als zweitbeste Grundschule in der Region Iringa ab. Für uns von Schulbank ist das ein ganz wichtiges Zeichen. Zeigt es doch, dass hohes Bildungsniveau auch unter einfachsten Bedingungen mit hoch motivierten Lehrern und einem gelebten Teamgedanken erreicht werden kann.
Schulbank e.V.. schickt im März seine ersten 20 Stipendiaten an die Ukombozi Primary School.

Tanzania’s economic situation

According to World Bank statistics, Tanzania is the third largest recipient of official aid in Africa with $2.831 billion after Ethiopia and the DR Congo (2013). Its gross domestic product amounted to $33.23 billion, with a per capita income of $630. 28.2% of the population live below the poverty line. 33% of government spending is financed from abroad. The World Bank has tried, with little success, to improve the effectiveness and transparency of aid project implementation through training programs. Read more

Primary level of education 2013

In 2012, an in-depth study was carried out on learning outcomes in elementary school (UWEZO Tanzania 2012; test of 104,000 children between the ages of 7 and 16). The results were sobering: 50 percent of primary school leavers (standard VII) were unable to read a grade 2 text adequately, and the figure for grade 3 pupils was as high as 85%. The results in other subjects also showed a need for reform, especially English language skills. The test found that children from rural areas and from less affluent parents performed significantly worse. The director of the study said: “Tanzania is not a nation when it comes to education.” Read more
